Map features

Points of interest, terrain, 3D buildings and contour lines: what each one adds and where to switch it on.

On this page

Map features are extra layers Mapji can draw over the basemap, from its own elevation, building and place data. Switch them on under Style → Map Features. Changes preview straight away and are saved with the editor's Save.

FeatureWhat it adds
3D TerrainRelief with hill shading, so mountains and valleys stand out when the map is tilted
3D BuildingsBuildings extruded to their height, from zoom 13
Contour LinesLines of equal elevation, from zoom 9, labeled in meters from zoom 11
Points of interestThe basemap's places, such as transit stops, parks and public buildings; more kinds, such as shops and restaurants, with a custom map style

All four work with any style, including the satellite ones. A Crowdsourced Map offers Points of interest only. On a Compare map they apply to both halves.

3D Terrain

Terrain raises the ground by its elevation — exaggerated one and a half times, so relief reads clearly — and adds hill shading under the labels, colored to suit light and dark styles. It is most striking when the map is tilted: hold the right mouse button and drag, or set a tilt in the opening view. Turning terrain on doesn't tilt the map by itself.

3D Buildings

Buildings appear from zoom 13 and are extruded to their recorded height, using Overture Maps data. When you turn them on, the map tilts to 45° so the heights show, and turning them off tilts it back — unless the view is locked.

Contour Lines

Contour lines appear from zoom 9 and get denser as you zoom in. Major lines are labeled with their elevation in meters from zoom 11.

Points of interest

The Points of interest switch turns the basemap's places on or off for this map, whatever the style shows by default — you can even add them over satellite imagery. Which kinds of places appear is part of the map style: to show only cafés and transit stops, for example, create a custom map style and choose the kinds on its Visibility tab.
